Assign These Jobs To Your Helpers On Moving Day

Posted on: 22 March 2016

When your moving day is fast approaching, knowing that you can count on the help of family members and friends can lighten the burden -- physically and emotionally -- of the big day. However, the last thing you need is to be busy working and notice that your helpers are standing around because you haven't assigned them a specific duty. While you'll rely on your helpers to carry boxes and other items from your house to the moving truck, it's smart to give some of your more reliable helpers specific jobs of which they're in charge throughout the day. Here are some roles to consider.

Ensuring Each Box Has A Label

Regardless of whether you wish to write the contents of each box on the box itself, the ease of the move can be greatly increased when every box is labeled. This label indicates where the box should be placed in the new home -- this will prevent a box of kitchen items from being carted up to the master bedroom, for example. Assign one helper to this role and make sure that he or she has a role of tape and a permanent marker to help label any boxes that somehow were missed.

Handling All The Fragile Goods

Someone who is patient and reliable can be assigned the duty of handling your fragile items. Often, you'll want to transport these in a personal vehicle instead of your rented moving truck. Ideally, you'll have placed "Fragile" stickers on every box and item that meets this description. You can then have the person in charge of those items move throughout your home, gather all of the fragile items in a specific area, and begin the careful task of loading them into the truck.

Cleaning The Space

If you're the conscientious type of mover who wants to leave your home in proper condition, assign a friend or two to begin the cleaning process even as the move is taking place. You can give this job to those who want to help but might not be up for carrying heavy boxes. They can tackle each room as it's empty -- things such as vacuuming, dusting and patching any holes in the walls are ideal duties.

Making Sure Things Fit

It's always a good idea to have a patient helper remain in the rental truck and handle the job of making sure your possessions fit. Some helpers might pile boxes in the truck in a disorderly fashion, but having someone who can move the items around will help you get the most out of the space.

If you would rather not deal with family members and friends, don't hesitate to call a professional moving company.
